Glossary of Terms
|
| Free play: | A time for children to practice making choices, socializing,
language and negotiating skills development and one on one time with a teacher.
It is also an opportunity to choose from a variety of activities that focus on
physical and intellectual concepts. |
| Circle: | A time for the children to learn group skills of turn taking,
listening, speaking, spatial awareness, following directions and observation.
French is also introduced at this time along with music and movement and science
projects. Cooking may also be included as part of circle. |
| Special Art: | Individual time spent with the teacher learning art processes
and practicing cutting, gluing and rendering skills. This is also a time for
language skills and confidence building. |
| Creative Art: | At Fatima Pre-K, we focus on process rather than product so that
what may appear as a hodge-podge of material glued to paper, is actually a
learning experience about the properties of glue, paint, colour mixing, how to
cut, choice making, etc. Creative skills are developed through individual
exploration of a wide variety of materials at the cutting/gluing station, art
table, light table and art easel. |
| Computer time: | The computer is used as a teaching tool in areas such as
pre-reading and math skills, eye/hand co-ordination etc. The computer also is
there to introduce basic skills for children who may not have a computer at
home. The computer is also used as another activity to promote turn-taking,
language and social skills; therefore, we encourage children to play in pairs
rather than alone. We use a name check list to ensure that all children who want
to play get a turn on the computer and at the same time evade prolonged playtime
in this area by any one child. |
| Listening Centre: | The listening centre can accommodate up to 4 children at one
time. The children listen to tapes that teach alphabets and board games that
require matching animals to the sounds, they make or everyday sounds matched to
objects. Storybooks and matching tapes are also available. These activities also
promote skills such as; learning to count, one-on- correspondence, language and
teamwork skills. |
| Snack Time: | Time to practice social skills and learn about nutrition. We
require that the children only bring nutritious food in their snack, see snack
list. |
| Quiet Time: | A time to sit on mats, look at books and music appreciation. The
children are exposed to a variety of music from all over the world. |
